SCAMS TO BE AWARE OF:
New Debit Card Telephone Scam
Event Characteristics
Cardholders receive computer-generated calls claiming to be from their FI. The calls claim their accounts have been frozen and then direct the cardholder to call a toll-free number to leave their debit card information in order to reactivate any cards. The toll-free number includes a recorded message that asks the member to key their account number, card expiration date and PIN.
Recommendations
Cardholder awareness is key in combating fraud. Should you receive any questionable calls, please do not provide any personal information! Remember, EFCU employees will NEVER ask for your account number or other personal information on a call we initiate to you.
In addition, remember these tips:
• Make sure you (the cardholder) initiate the contact, and the institution verifies your identity with questions only you would know.
• To verify whether a call is legitimate, call us or visit our website, using phone numbers or internet addresses from your account statement or account documentation. Do not call back a number provided over the phone or click on a link in an e-mail.
• Most communications will include something that will concern or excite the victim.
• If you have been a victim of a scam, file a complaint with local law enforcement.
• Notify us immediately.
PHISHING: Don't take the bait!
There's a new sport in town that involves some real poachers. It's called "phishing" - and the phishermen are trolling for you.
Phishers use spam - unwanted e-mail - to lure people into fake Web sites to obtain personal information and commit identitiy theft. Victims receive fraudulent e-mails containing authentic-looking logos and familiar graphics. They often will lead to a "spoofed," or fake site that looks authentic. You're asked to divulge account information or other personal data such as usernames, passwords, and Social Security numbers.
Your credit union will never send you an e-mail - or call you by phone - asking for personal data. We already have this information.
Studies show that most identity theft still occurs when theives obtain information from paper - by digging through trash cans or stealing from mailboxes. Even so, it's a fact that even the most tech-savvy people can be victims of phishing attacks.
